Rachel and Chris Harding raise Certified Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World (AGW) sheep…
The herd of beef cattle and flock of sheep at Liberty Farms in Ghent, NY are now Certified Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World (AGW).
The herd of beef cattle at Liberty Farms consists of Red and Black Angus, with a new addition of Herefords. The flock of sheep at Liberty Farms rotationally graze over thirty hilly acres with their guard donkey, Frank. The sheep are shorn each year, providing the farm with natural, un-dyed yarn. Additionally, the lambs fleeces are processed and used for a number of things including seat warmers, rugs, blankets, and for those who are more crafty mittens and slippers.
“The cattle and sheep are crucial to our regenerative soil efforts,” says Livestock Manager at Liberty Farms, Paul-Ivan Derreumaux. “During the summer months as they’re rotated through pastures, they are fertilizing as they go. Through the winter months they provide fertilization (via composted manure) for our Certified Organic Garden and the farm’s hay fields, which in turn, makes our soils more fertile.”
In addition to being Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW, the flock of sheep and herd of cattle at Liberty Farms are Certified Grassfed by AGW, the first—and only—food label in the U.S. and Canada that guarantees food products come from animals fed a 100% grass and forage diet, and raised entirely outdoors on pasture or range.
The team at Liberty Farms was proud to achieve Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW and Certified Grassfed by AGW status for their beef cattle and sheep. “By using the natural cycles of nature, plant life, and animals we not only feed communities with healthy, nutritious food, we also help reverse climate change and rebuild healthy soil.”
