Christopher and Leigh Moul raise Certified Grassfed by AGW beef cattle at Locust Point Cattle Company in Dover, Pennsylvania. When Chris decided to start his business raising beef cattle, he knew he wanted to produce gourmet beef from cattle fed a non-grain diet, and raised without the use of routine antibiotics and added hormones—and he wanted to track every piece of beef sold, from farm to table. He wanted his beef business to be different.
Today, the Mouls raise just over 120 head of Angus cattle on 190 acres of well-managed pasture with the help of Josh and Wayne Hoffman and Jerry and Patty Leib. The cattle at Locust Point Cattle Company are Certified Grassfed by AGW, the first—and only—food label in the U.S. and Canada that guarantees food products come from animals fed a 100 percent grass and forage diet, and raised entirely outdoors on pasture or range. Locust Point Cattle Company was the second farm in Pennsylvania to receive this certification for their beef cattle.
The Mouls couldn’t do it alone though, and they are thankful for the help of Josh and Wayne Hoffman, who help to manage the workload and the business with the Mouls. Chris and Leigh’s daughters, Hayden and Bailey, also play a key role in the business.
“It’s really important to us to have happy, healthy cattle,” Chris explains. “When the animals are happy they graze, and when they graze they are making us money. Not to mention, the meat is better flavored due to less stress. Genetics, water, shade, grass, no confinement—all those things lend themselves to better tasting, higher quality meat. At Locust Point Cattle Company, we do everything we can to make the beef taste great. You take a bite of our beef and it’s an amazing experience.”
The Mouls looked into Certified Grassfed by AGW and Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW certifications because they wanted to start selling to larger suppliers. “It’s important for all of our customers to know that we go to great lengths and put in a lot of effort to raise our beef the way we do, and that we are meeting the highest environmental and animal welfare standards,” Chris says. “A Greener World has reviewed our farm and the certification gives me comfort to know I’m doing something right. It confirms that the way we are raising our beef cattle is approved by experts.”
