Edgewood Operations farmer profile v3

Edgewood Plantation- Monticello, FL

For almost fifty years, the Edgewood Plantation family has been raising cattle according to the highest welfare standards. For decades, the herd of cattle have enjoyed grazing the lush pastures in a stress-free and serene environment at the farm in Monticello. Today, owner Susan Simmons, farm manager Sam Scott and the team at Edgewood Plantation continue to honor and practice the same commitment to the welfare of their herd of Certified Grassfed by AGW beef cattle. “We strive for excellence by raising healthy cattle in as natural an environment as possible,” Susan explains.

Edgewood Plantation raises Red Devon beef cattle outdoors on pasture without the use of hormones or subtherapeutic antibiotics. The cattle are never confined to a feedlot and always have access to grazing and forage throughout the surrounding pastures and woods, where they can demonstrate their natural behaviors and enjoy the Florida sunshine and beautiful setting.

The beef cattle are rotationally managed, grazing one section of pasture before being moved to fresh fields. This type of management allows grass to recover before cattle return to graze again; it also keeps the soil properly fertilized and minimizes the build-up of internal parasites.

In 2015, Edgewood Plantation became the second farm in the state of Florida to be Certified Grassfed by AGW for their beef cattle. This is the only certification and food label in the U.S. and Canada that guarantees food products come from animals fed a 100 percent grass and forage diet, raised entirely outdoors on pasture or range, and managed according to the highest welfare and environmental standards on an independent family farm.

In 2024, Edgewood Plantation will be a stop on the World Devon Congress Tour, an event commemorating 400 years of history of the Red Devon breed in North America. Tour attendees will visit the farm and see how the breed adapts to a hot, humid southern climate before moving on to other stops in the Eastern portion of the United States.

The family and staff at Edgewood Plantation are dedicated to raising a healthy herd using high-welfare management practices. For more information, contact the farm at 850-499-9901 or edgewoodoperations@gmail.com.
