Bill and Sharie Leibold raise Certified Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World (AGW), Certified Grassfed by AGW beef cattle at 4,000-acre L6 Cattle Ranches in Corona, New Mexico. L6 Cattle Ranches was formed in 2006 so Bill could fulfill his life-long dream of being a cattle rancher and the family could create a healthier, more wholesome lifestyle. The ranch is made up of native grasslands, which the Angus cattle graze freely.
Although the Leibolds were already Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW in 2009 for their high-welfare and environmental management practices, they were eager to gain Certified Grassfed by AGW status for their grassfed cattle herd when the new program was launched in January 2015. The label is the only certification and logo in the U.S. and Canada that guarantees food products come from animals fed a 100 percent grass and forage diet, raised outdoors on pasture or range for their entire lives, and managed according to the highest welfare and environmental standards on an independent farm.
L6 Cattle Ranches is proud to manage their cattle on an entirely grassfed diet, which offers wide-ranging benefits to the animals, the environment and the consumer. Sharie explains their cattle are never placed in feedlots or fed any grain because the introduction of grain to the cattle’s diet diminishes the quality of the beef, resulting in reduced health benefits: “Our cattle graze on rangeland, which is divided up into large pastures. We utilize pasture rotation during the grass growing season to naturally control pests and assure quality grass growth.”
“Our grassfed beef is 85 percent lean, four to six times lower in fat than grain-fed beef, and is packed with nutrients like omega-3, vitamin E, B-vitamins, calcium, magnesium and potassium,” says Sharie. “When you choose to eat meat, eggs and dairy products from animals raised on pasture, you are improving the welfare of the animals, helping to put an end to environmental degradation, helping ranchers and farmers make a living from the land, helping to sustain rural communities and giving your family the healthiest possible food. It’s a win-win situation.”
Choosing the right certification and food label to match the high quality of their beef was important for the Leibolds. “We decided to apply for Certified Grassfed by AGW status for our grassfed cattle because the Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW program has a great reputation and their application procedures are very simple—for us it was painless,” Sharie explains. “Both Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW and L6 Cattle Ranches are committed to making sure we treat our animals with the highest welfare standards. Our customers are primarily concerned that animals are raised naturally and treated humanely, so the Certified Grassfed by AGW logo will mean a lot. It will give our customers confidence that the food they give their families is the highest quality grassfed beef.”
