Susan Bergen and her daughter, Jessica, raise Certified Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World (AGW) beef cattle on pasture at Peach Crest Ranch in Norman, OK. Susan oversees all the ranching, farming and cattle sectors of business and her years in the industry have driven her to do things differently. Susan is passionate about “clean agriculture using the people, planet, profit model of sustainability in her business.”
The Bergens provide their cattle with ample outdoor space and believe that when the animals are raised on pasture, they’re healthier and produce better tasting beef: “Peach Crest Ranch cattle experience life much as cattle did in the 1800s, grazing open prairies, moving to lusher grazing land as needed, enjoying fresh spring water and breeding and giving birth as nature intended. This stress-free life brings vitality and, as one chef recently stated, results in the most vibrant meat he had ever worked with.”
Susan also understands that pasture-raised cattle have a beneficial impact on the land—particularly soil health. “Peach Crest Ranch livestock eat from the prairies, enjoying the native grasses that grow on the ranch,” she explains. “Twice a year, in the fall and the spring, the pastures are reseeded in limited areas with customized mixes containing legumes, grasses and brassicas that not only contribute to the livestock’s nutritional needs, but also help build soil organic matter and fertility. We are large carbon sequesters and regularly measure our soil health with our state soil biologist, Dr. Greg Scott.” For the years since Susan has been operating this property, the soil has seen huge improvement and regeneration.
