Primal Cuts is operated by Jessica Wieloh and Jim Pedersen on the northern tip of the Big Island in North Kohala, Hawaii. The two have over 10 years of diverse farming and animal husbandry experience in Hawaii. Jessica and Jim raise Certified Grassfed by A Greener World (AGW) sheep and Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW beef cattle outdoors on pasture on 100 acres of former sugar cane fields, as well as growing high-value crops—including breadfruit, coconuts, papayas, bananas and hot peppers. As the property is very near the coast, they’ve planted extensive windbreaks to mitigate the trade winds and salt spray coming off the ocean.
Primal Cuts is proud to be the first business in Hawaii to raise Certified Grassfed by AGW sheep—the only food label in the U.S. and Canada that guarantees food products come from animals fed a 100 percent grass and forage diet, and raised entirely outdoors on pasture or range—and is also the fifth in Hawaii to become Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW for beef cattle. Jessica and Jim raise around 30 breeding ewes and 15 head of cattle in a planned rotational grazing system. This method of production benefits their pasture as well as the health of their animals, which is of upmost importance to the farmers.
Primal Cuts is part of the Hawaii Island Meat Cooperative, a producer-owned and -operated business established to provide high-quality, high-welfare slaughter services for island ranchers, and to increase the availability of fresh, local meats for consumers. The cooperative first approached Jessica and Jim about joining the Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW program; they both felt it was a great fit and mirrored their exemplary animal husbandry practices and commitment to sustainability.
