Shauna Perez along with her family raise Certified Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World (AGW) pigs at Sasquatch Family Farms in Toledo, Washington with view of both Mt. Rainier and Mt. St. Helens in the distance. “The farm is part of the historical Herren Homestead,” says Shauna Perez. “Farming has been a part of the history of the land here for the last 140 years. With family being of utmost importance to us, our mission through farming is to gather family, friends, and community together in this historic place.”
Pigs at Sasquatch Family Farms are raised outdoors, on pasture or range, where they are free to root and forage as pigs naturally do. This high-welfare management is a fundamental component of Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW certification and is known to have environmental, nutritional, and culinary benefits. “Our Berkshire pigs live their lives from birth to harvest on the farm with plenty of room to run, root, and be pigs,” says Shauna. Berkshires are one of the oldest established breeds of pig. They are noted for unique marbling of the entire carcass, which results in unmatched flavor of the Berkshire pork. “They are known for their dark, marbled, tender, and flavorful meat—it’s like nothing you would try in the grocery store which is exactly what got us hooked,” says Shauna. “We love the quality and consistency these hogs offer.” Berkshire sows are also excellent mothers and respond best in pasture and range-based farming systems.
Shauna chose to pursue AGW certification for the verification of their high-welfare farming practices offered through the Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW program. “It’s our goal to bring our customers the tastiest and most nutrient-dense products we can—meat that’s good for people, animals, and the land we all share.”
