Vanessa Frias and her family raise Certified Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World (AGW)…

Staples Farm – Harrah, OK
The Staples family has called their farm home since 1971, when H.L. and Billie Staples purchased the property in Lincoln County. The Staples operated a dairy from 1976 until 1987. From 1988 until 2009, when H.L. and Billie retired, the family ran a commercial vegetable operation, Staples Redbud Vegetable Farm. H.L. In 2014, their oldest son, Leo, and his wife, Julie, purchased the farm with plans to implement management practices that build soil health. Today, Leo, Julie, and their multi-generational farming team raise Berkshire pigs that are Certified Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World (AGW) at Staples Farm in Harrah, Oklahoma.
The Berkshire pigs at Staples Farm are raised outdoors on pasture or range, where they are free to root and forage as pigs naturally do. This high-welfare management is a fundamental component of AGW certification and is known to have environmental, nutritional, and culinary benefits. Berkshires are one of the oldest established breeds of pig. They are noted for their unique marbling of the entire carcass, which results in unmatched flavor of the Berkshire pork. Berkshire sows are excellent mothers and respond best to a pasture-based farming system. Allowing these pigs to grow slowly and naturally equates to an unsurpassed pork quality.
The Staples Family chose to pursue AGW certification because of the benefits of third-party verification for their farm and animals, as well as for the community. “We are committed to being good stewards of the land,” says Leo. “We believe in hard work, valuing our animals and raising them with respect for their contributions to our lives, and creating a better environment for future generations. Our AGW certification backs up our high-welfare management practices and provides the highest level of assurance for our customers.”
Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW Berkshire pork from Staples Farm is available directly from the farm (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday 2-6pm) and at Conscious Community Co-op in Edmond, OK.
