Shauna Perez along with her family raise Certified Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World…
Campfire Farms – Mulino, OR
Zach and Christina Menchini, along with their two boys, Freddy and Hugo, raise Certified Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World (AGW) pigs at Campfire Farms in Mulino, Oregon. After spending their twenties learning all they could about food and farming, the couple moved to Oregon in 2014 and began raising 20 pigs. By 2021, they managed approximately 300 pigs and sold direct to customers in the region.
The pigs at Campfire Farms are raised outdoors on pasture and range, where they are free to root and forage as pigs naturally do. This high-welfare management is a fundamental component of AGW certification and is known to have environmental, nutritional, and culinary benefits. “Our animals are “pasture raised,” which means that they spend their entire lives outside and in an environment as close to their natural habitat as possible,” says Zach. “Expression of their natural instincts leads to a healthier, happier animal, and a more nutritious and higher quality product than animals raised in industrial systems.”
Pasture-based, high-welfare management practices are the foundation to the Menchini family’s animal husbandry practices. “Our approach to farming is much different than how most livestock are raised. Our methods are a combination of the “old fashioned” way that honors animals’ instincts and a forward-looking consideration for our environment,” says Zach. “We care for our soil and water, and seek to improve it every year through quick rotation of animals, which spreads out their manure and improves growth of forage and cover crops that we seed continuously.”
Campfire Farms chose to pursue AGW certification to demonstrate the quality and care that underscores their management practices and for the added level of verification it provides for their customers. “We’re proud that our practices and choices led us to AGW certification and are glad to part of AGW’s family of farmers in North America.”
