Bear Meadows Farm – Boalsburg, PA

Jeff and Claudia Biddle raise Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW dairy cattle on Bear Meadows Farm in Boalsburg, Pennsylvania. The farm is nestled in the base of Tussey Mountain, among gently rolling hills and lush pastures. “It is a beautiful farm,” Jeff says. “Though it has way too many rocks,” he adds with a chuckle.

Currently Jeff manages around 90 cows and calves on Bear Meadows. The herd is composed of a mixture of breeds, including Holsteins, Guernseys, Jerseys and Ayrshires, which are all breeds known for their ability to be highly efficient converters of forage, and producers of good quantities of milk in proportion to their feed intake.

Every fall, Jeff and Claudia host a Customer Appreciation day at Bear Meadows. Customers are invited out to the farm for a farm tour and party. Jeff and Claudia have been extremely impressed and humbled by how much their customer base has expanded in recent years. “I guess all you need is one taste,” Jeff says of his high-quality milk, “And you’re converted! We have customers that drive from over 40 miles away just to buy our milk.” In addition to the bottled milk available at Bear Meadows Farm, the couple also produces a line of high-quality cheeses made with their Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW milk. Bear Meadows Farm AGW-Certified cheeses include Swiss, Colby and Cheddar, with additional flavors to be released soon.

In 2019, Bear Meadows Farm celebrated 10 years of certification with Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW. The Biddles received a commemorative metal farm sign to acknowledge the decade of certification—and ongoing commitment to high-welfare, sustainable farming. “We are proud to be celebrating our 10-year anniversary as Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW because animal welfare is extremely important to me. We want to give our animals the best care possible, and this certification proves that we do. It’s as simple as that. Over the years, many customers have come to our farm to purchase our products because they have concerns about where their food comes from and how the animals are treated. For these customers, our Animal Welfare Approved by AGW certification has been the reassurance they need,” says Jeff.
