Kinnikinnick Farm – Caledonia, IL

  • A Greener World

In 1994, David and Susan Cleverdon established a half-acre garden on farmland overlooking the north branch of the Kinnikinnick Creek in Illinois, and Kinnikinnick Farm was born. David and Susan now raise a flock of Certified Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World (AGW) laying hens outdoor on pasture at Kinnikinnick Farm near Caledonia.

The flock of Americana, Barred Rock, Black Astrolorp, New Hampshire Red and Buff Orpington hens are raised outdoors on pasture at Kinnikinnick Farm, where they can perform natural behaviors like running, dust bathing, pecking and scratching for grubs and seeds. The birds roam freely during the day and are moved to fresh ground regularly, preventing the build-up of pests and diseases and ensuring the land remains healthy and productive. Pasture-based management not only provides the highest welfare conditions for the hens, but also produces healthier eggs containing three times as much vitamin E, seven times more beta-carotene, and twice the omega-3 fatty acids as industrial eggs.

Kinnikinnick Farm’s Certified Animal Welfare Approved by AGW pasture-raised chicken eggs are available through the Cleverdon’s local home delivery service (called the Kinnikinnick Direct) and at seasonal farmers’ markets including the Evanston Farmers Market in the summer and the Chicago Green City Indoor Market in the winter. Find additional places where Kinnikinnick Farm pasture-raised eggs are available on their website and the A Greener World online product directory.
