Katie Pencke and Matthew McDermott raise Certified Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World (AGW) pigs at Alluvial Farms in Everson, WA. Together, the couple has over thirty-two years of farming experience.  In 2016, Katie and Matthew launched Alluvial Farms and raised ten hogs on a three-acre lease in their first year. In 2018 the couple moved into an off-grid yurt on their own 45 acres of raw land. Over the next few years they installed farming infrastructure including a 4200 square foot hoop barn, irrigation mainline, and walk-in freezer on farm. In 2020, their fifth season in business, the couple established a 14 sow and one boar breeding herd, harvested 124 hogs for market, gained Animal Welfare Approved by AGW certification for their pork, and launched a hemp enterprise featuring self-care products made from lard and CBD produced on farm.

Alluvial Farms raises Berkshire cross pigs on organic pastures. “Our pigs have constant access to the outdoors as well as a big airy barn where they can nest down and stay cool in the summer, warm in the winter,” says Katie. “From March to November, the pigs are rotationally grazed on ten acres of farmed pig forage pastures, and seasonally on parts of our twenty-acre grain field. This is best for soil health and ensures pigs always have access to fresh forages. One-acre paddocks are large enough to encourage natural activities such as rooting, running, and socializing. November through December outdoor access is provided in a 9000 square foot heavy used area around the barn, deep bedded with wood shavings.”
